Trade License Plates in the Netherlands: Everything You Need to Know

In the Netherlands, trade license plates are also known as 'green plates'. What exactly is a Dutch trade license plate and when can you use it on public roads? This blog explains everything you need to know.

What is a Trade License Plate?

A trade license plate allows you to drive vehicles from your business inventory on public roads in the Netherlands. This applies to activities such as test drives, repairs, or delivering vehicles to customers. You can apply for a trade license plate through the Dutch Road Transport Authority (RDW).

Different Types of Green Plates

There are several types of trade license plates. These are distinguished by their letter combinations.

Vehicle TypeLetter Combination
Motor vehiclesHA, HH, FH or HF
Trailers and special agricultural/forestry vehiclesOA
Mopeds and light mopedsHC
Agricultural and forestry tractors, slow vehicles and mobile machineryLH

Trade License Plates: The Rules

A green plate cannot be used without restrictions. There are several conditions that must be met. The following is not allowed:

  • private use of the trade license plate
  • transportation of passengers or goods
  • parking on public roads
  • using the trade license plate for loan vehicles and demonstration models
  • using the trade license plate outside the Netherlands

Additionally, either you or the customer must carry the trade license certificate during test drives, the license plate must be insured, and you cannot lend it to third parties.

Trade License Plates Abroad

Dutch trade license plates can only be used within the Netherlands, with a few exceptions. In Germany, usage is only permitted for construction, conversion, or repair work being carried out there. This requires written confirmation from the workshop. In such cases, choosing vehicle transport is often the easier and more practical option.

You may also use Dutch trade license plates in Belgium or Luxembourg, but only for buying or selling vehicles. Test drives are not permitted with green plates in these countries.

Applying for a Trade License Plate with RDW

You can apply for a (additional) trade license plate through the RDW. This is possible if your company has business stock recognition. If you don't have this recognition, you can find the applicable requirements on the RDW website.
