For most transport vehicles, a digital tachograph is mandatory. Nowadays, that is the Smart Tacho 2. But what exactly is this? And what is the difference with the Smart Tacho 1? In this blog, we will explain it to you.

What is the Smart Tacho 2?

The Smart Tacho 2 is the latest digital tachograph in Europe. This device is installed in the vehicle and records, just like previous versions, the driving and rest times, speed, and distance traveled. However, the Smart Tacho 2 has several new, useful features compared to its predecessors. For instance, it also automatically registers border crossings, loading and unloading activities, and the vehicle's position. This is all done using GNSS technology (satellite navigation). Additionally, the security has been improved to combat fraud and manipulation.

From when is the Smart Tacho 2 mandatory?

Since August 21, 2023, all newly registered vehicles must be equipped with a Smart Tacho 2 immediately. Subsequently, the obligation has been gradually expanded. From January 1, 2025, vehicles over 3,500 kg with an analog or old digital tachograph must switch when they drive internationally. As of August 19, 2025, the same obligation applies to vehicles over 3,500 kg. The final major step will take place in July 2026: from then on, vans between 2,500 and 3,500 kg that drive internationally must also have a Smart Tacho 2.

The exception to the rule

Not every vehicle needs to be equipped with a Smart Tacho 2 immediately. Vehicles that only drive nationally and were registered before August 31, 2023, may continue to operate with their existing tachograph for the time being.

The differences between Smart Tacho 1 and Smart Tacho 2

The difference between Smart Tacho 1 and Smart Tacho 2 mainly lies in additional automation and better control. The Smart Tacho 1 does not have this, but its successor does:

Border crossings are automatically registered. Manually entering a country code is no longer necessary.
Loading and unloading is automatically recorded, including the location, so it is always clear where this occurs.
There is more storage space for data. The Smart Tacho 2 stores data for 56 days, while the Smart Tacho 1 retains information for 28 days.
More information is available during remote checks. Inspectors can read the maximum driving time, among other things.
The Smart Tacho 2 has better security against fraud and manipulation.

What does a Smart Tacho 2 cost?

The costs for a Smart Tacho 2 vary by vehicle and situation. In practice, prices usually range between €1,300 and €1,400, including installation. However, the final price depends on factors such as:

the type of vehicle;
the tachograph currently installed;
the complexity of the installation;
any additional modules, software, or connections.

Because the Smart Tacho 2 is technically more advanced and better secured than its predecessor, the costs are generally somewhat higher.

A new driver card is also mandatory

With the transition to the Smart Tacho 2, a new driver card is also required. The old driver card does not work with this latest generation of tachographs. Drivers need a Gen3 driver card for this. If you continue to drive with an old driver card while the vehicle is equipped with a Smart Tacho 2, you risk a fine during a check.
