Driving Ban Belgium: What You Need to Know
In Belgium, various driving bans apply to trucks, especially for exceptional transport and during extreme weather conditions. This can affect transport planning.
General Driving Ban in Belgium for Trucks
Unlike countries such as France and Germany, Belgium has no general driving ban for trucks on Sundays and public holidays. Trucks over 7.5 tons are therefore allowed to drive. However, there are restrictions for exceptional transport (too wide, too long, or too heavy).
Driving Ban for Exceptional Transport
The following restrictions apply to exceptional transport:
- On public holidays: driving ban from 16:00 the day before until 24:00 on the holiday.
- On weekends: driving ban from Saturday 12:00 until Sunday 24:00.
- Daily driving ban from 06:00 to 21:00 for transport wider than 4 meters or longer than 30 meters.
- On highways with fewer than three lanes, this applies from 3.5 meters width.
Driving Ban Belgium During Public Holidays
In 2025, a driving ban for exceptional transport applies on the following Belgian public holidays (from 16:00 the day before until 24:00 on the holiday):
- New Year's Day (January 1, 2025)
- Easter Monday (April 21, 2025)
- Labor Day (May 1, 2025)
- Ascension Day (May 29, 2025)
- Whit Monday (June 9, 2025)
- National Holiday (July 21, 2025)
- Assumption of Mary (August 15, 2025)
- All Saints' Day (November 1, 2025)
- Armistice Day (November 11, 2025)
- Christmas (December 25, 2025)
Driving Ban During Extreme Weather Conditions
During extreme weather, Belgium may impose additional driving bans, especially for exceptional transport:
- Snow and ice: exceptional transport may be banned during slippery conditions.
- Dense fog, heavy rain or snowfall: a ban applies when visibility is less than 200 meters.
- Overtaking ban for trucks over 7.5 tons during heavy rain or snow.
Driving Ban During Rush Hours and on Certain Roads
In some regions, additional restrictions apply for exceptional transport during rush hours:
- Antwerp (R1) – between exits no. 2 (Antwerp-North) and no. 6
- Brussels (R0)
- Charleroi (R9)
- Highways A604 - A15 (Seraing-Hognoul)
- Liège (E40/E42-E25) – between Burenville and Tilff
At these locations, a driving ban applies from 06:00 to 09:00 and from 16:00 to 21:00.
The Liefkenshoek Tunnel: Additional Toll Charges
For trucks higher than 3 meters, an extra high toll applies in the Liefkenshoek Tunnel (between Antwerp and Beveren). Current prices can be found on the tunnel's official website.
