Driving Bans in Europe

In many European countries, such as Belgium, Germany, and France, there is a driving ban for freight traffic on specific days and times. This is the case on Sundays and during national holidays.

Driving Ban for Trucks in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, a driving ban only applies if the weather is bad and visibility is less than 200 meters. This is only applicable on weekends, from Saturday morning 09:00 to Sunday 24:00.

Driving Ban for Trucks in Germany

In Germany, there is a driving ban on multiple days. Heavy trucks – those weighing more than 7.5 tons – and trucks with trailers are not allowed to drive on Sundays and public holidays from 00:00 to 22:00. Additionally, during the summer months, in July and August, there is a driving ban on certain highways on Saturdays. Finally, there is a driving ban on various national holidays, such as New Year's Day, Good Friday, and during Christmas.

On certain highways around Brussels and Antwerp, there is a driving ban during peak hours. There is also a driving ban for trucks in Belgium on public holidays. And just like in the Netherlands, Belgium has a driving ban if the weather is bad and visibility is less than 200 meters.

Driving Ban for Trucks in France

In France, there is a driving ban on multiple days. Trucks weighing more than 7.5 tons are not allowed to drive from Saturday 22:00 to Sunday 22:00. Trucks are also not allowed on the road during public holidays. And if it is a black Saturday? Trucks are also not allowed to drive then.

Driving Ban for Trucks in Spain

Spain only imposes a driving ban for trucks transporting hazardous materials. Additionally, there is a driving ban in downtown Madrid on weekdays from 09:00 to 21:00 and on public holidays from 00:00 to 24:00. This applies only to trucks weighing 12 tons or more.

Driving Ban for Trucks in Switzerland

Switzerland is a bit stricter. Here, a driving ban applies to vehicles weighing 3,500 kg or more. This is the case on Sundays and public holidays: the driving ban applies all day. On other days, trucks are not allowed to drive between 22:00 and 05:00. Additionally, there is often a driving ban on national and international holidays.

Driving Ban for Trucks in Austria

In Austria, heavy trucks are not allowed to drive from Saturday 15:00 to Sunday 22:00. This also applies on public holidays, from 00:00 to 22:00. Additionally, there is a night driving ban: trucks heavier than 7.5 tons are not allowed on the road between 22:00 and 05:00.

Driving Ban for Trucks in Italy

In Italy, there is a driving ban on Sundays for trucks heavier than 7.5 tons. From January to May and in the months of October to December, these trucks are not allowed to drive between 09:00 and 22:00. During the summer months from June to September, the driving ban starts earlier, at 07:00, and lasts until 22:00.

Driving Ban for Trucks in Luxembourg

In Luxembourg, there are driving bans for trucks heavier than 7.5 tons that are heading to France or Germany. They are not allowed to go to France on Saturdays, or the evening before a French holiday (from 21:30) and on the holidays themselves (until 21:45). For transport towards Germany, this ban applies from 23:30 to 21:45 on Sundays or on public holidays. On Sundays and Luxembourg public holidays, there is no driving ban within Luxembourg itself.
